FAQ's - Choosing/Installing A New Boiler

When it comes to buying or replacing your boiler, it's crucial that you have carried out adequate research beforehand so you can choose the right boiler for your home. We understand that it's tricky to know where to start, but this blog post should help answer a couple of common questions on new boiler installs and help you get started...

Which boiler is right for my home?

If you are looking for a new boiler, there are a few different types to consider, all of which have their own pros and cons.

It's worth noting that due to a law passed in 2005, all boilers manufactured in the UK are condensing boilers. Why? Condensing boilers are better for the environment and they're more economical; they save heat and money that would otherwise be wasted by condensing excess water.
The most common boiler is a combi (combination) boiler. Combination boilers are suitable for smaller homes as most of the major components are built into the boiler itself. They're perhaps most suitable for homes with naturally high water pressure and that do not require a lot of hot water at the same time, i.e. 2 or 3 bathrooms.
Another type of boiler you may come across is a regular boiler. These are better suited to larger homes as they need two water storage tanks, one for hot water and one for cold water, and so need a lot more room. Regular boilers are ideal for homes that require a lot of hot water, or that have multiple bathrooms and need lots of water at the same time.

How long should my boiler last?

On average, a boiler should last anywhere between 10-15 years, but that's only if it's looked after with annual servicing and maintenance. As with anything, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last.
You'll know when you need a replacement boiler as the number of repairs will slowly start to mount up. If this is the case, you will save yourself money by just replacing it.

Which boiler brand should I choose?

Choosing the right boiler manufacturer can be difficult as there are many different manufacturers to choose between. Each manufacturer has their own advantages and disadvantages, so it might be best to do some research of your own to find out which is best suited to you.
Here at Stour Valley Plumbing & Heating we're accredited with Baxi, meaning we can offer an extended warranty of up to 10 years on selected Baxi boilers that we install. We've previously written a blog on the benefits of installing a Baxi boiler where you can see why we're accredited and why we recommend Baxi.

How often should I service my boiler?

We'd highly recommend that you service your boiler every twelve months. This may feel like another unnecessary boiler cost, but it is the best way to keep it up and running all year round. Not only this, but it is the perfect time to spot any small problems before escalate into expensive repair bills.
